Abstract Acceptance is one of the major issues relating to disability. Several aspects of family life change after an of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. These changes affect parents especially in many different ways. One of the most stressful factors for the parents to deal with, during the upbringing of a child with ASD, is the lack of acceptance among the family members. This particular issue affects the parents’ wellbeing and the family quality of life. Empirical data prove that parents, whose children with ASD participate in therapeutical interventions, tend to accept gradually their children diagnosis. The parents trying to accept their child with ASD usually experience multiple emotions and go through four emotional stages in order to accept the diagnosis. In addition, each child has a biological need for positive reassurance from significant others. According to Parental Acceptance and Rejection Theory, the feelings of acceptance or rejection have an impact on the children and affect their life. Furthermore, the feeling of being accepted or rejected can shape the behavior of a child or cause behavioral problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of 20 parents of children with ASD about acceptance and the effect of acceptance in children development. The results of this study showed that the parents accept their children with ASD. In addition, the results pointed out the importance of parental acceptance for children with ASD, especially for their development, and various other factors which can contribute in child development.
