Abstract The geographical position of Greece, has brought the country in the spotlight during the increase of the migrant flows of the past years, under the so called ‘refugee crisis’. Both the closure of the Balkan route and the implementation of the E.U – Turkey agreement in the first months of 2016 led to the decrease of the migrant arrivals at the European borders, without stopping them altogether. The paper focuses on mapping down and analysing formal housing programs for asylum seekers in Greece. It seeks to clarify those programs, their goals, but also to research two main contradictions that are pointed out through the literature review: the first contradiction revolves around the Discourse of social integration of asylum seekers, with their simultaneous socio-spatial segregation, through their accommodation in remote locations. The second contradiction examined concerns the stratification of social rights of migrants according to their legal status. To give answers to those questions, a qualitative research was conducted in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece in July 2017, in which participated representatives of all the active housing programs of the city. The data produced confirmed that asylum seekers in Greece are primarily accommodated in remote areas, away from the urban nexus. This raises questions regarding their chances of integration and social participation in the Greek society. The data also confirms a stratification of rights according to legal status, bringing on the surface a paradox compared to the international literature: Asylum seekers in Greece are entitled to more provisions compared to recognised refugees. This paradox can be explained if someone takes under consideration the huge gaps and inconsistencies found in the Greek welfare system, but also the fact that the basic provider of those provisions for asylum seekers is not the Greek state but the UNHCR, collaborating with other Non-Governmental Organisations. With the UNHCR gradually withdrawing their activities and the Greek state being asked to take up a more active role, it would be very interesting to examine how these housing programs will evolve in the near future, and how they could promote or hinder the beneficiaries’ chances of integration.
