Abstract Background: In the past few decades, due to the permission to access the internet, the parents of pediatric surgery patients come to the Emergency Department, often having already searched for information about their child's condition. In any case, however, pediatric surgery is a stressful situation for the parent, which in combination with poor quality information from internet sources, can lead to specific expectations and limitations. This information is likely to change the classical way we practice medicine today, so we need to understand better both the sources of information used and the expectations created for the patients so that physicians can respond to it in the best possible way. Objective: We sought to answer to what extent parents of pediatric patients search for information on the internet before coming to the Emergency Department. We also wanted to evaluate the sources they used, the quality of the information they found, and how this information affected the parents' expectations regarding the treatment of their child's problem in the hospital. Methods: This was an observational study that included the parents of all children who came to the pediatric surgery ER of PAGNI during the study period. All data collection was in accordance with the regulation of the European Union for the protection of personal data. Results: The study included a total of 100 parents of patients, 57% of whom searched for information on the internet before their arrival, with the primary source being the search for medical websites through Google platform. The majority stated that the quality of the information they found was inferior, of moderate reliability and usefulness, which significantly increased the parents' anxiety before the examination by the doctor. 95% did not inform the doctor about finding this information. At the same time, after the examination, the parents' anxiety was significantly reduced. They reported that the information they received from the doctor was of better quality than the one they found on the internet. Finally, the vast majority asked for guidance on reputable websites for the correct information about their children's diseases Conclusions: Parents of paediatric surgery patients attending the ED are largely looking for information online before arrival. However, they find the information of poor quality and state that this increases their anxiety. The doctor remains the most reliable source of information although parents avoid admitting that they have searched for information fearing that this would offend their doctor. Finally, the majority of parents feel the need for guidance on targeted information websites from their doctors
