Abstract Given the rapid development of technology and therefore society in recent years, the need for modern educational systems is essential to globally modernize the methods and means used. This modernization includes the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education (Baltsavias & Kyridis, 2020). Research shows that children can and should be engaged in STEM learning, even from an early age. A growing number of studies show a correlation between early experiences with STEM subjects and later success in those subjects or in school in general (McClure, Guernsey, Clements, Bales, Nichols, Kendall-Taylor & Levine, 2017). STEM education aims to cultivate inquiring minds and skills needed in the 21st century (Hassan, Abdullah, Ismail, Suhud & Hamzah, 2019), to solve complex problems using innovation (McClure, et al., 2017) . For this reason, the application of STEM elements in the teaching of mathematics in preschool education is crucial (Hassan, et al., 2019). The process of learning mathematics during preschool age is a predictive factor for the skills and knowledge that children will acquire in their future life (Baltsavias & Kyridis, 2020). However, for mathematics engagement to be effective and constructive, the classroom environment should be continuously enriched with appropriate and interesting opportunities (Clements & Sarama, 2016). STEM education, including robot programming, can contribute to this (Wan, Jiang & Zhan, 2020). This research seeks to study the effect that STEM education has on mathematics and specifically on preschool children. In more detail, the questions of this study are the following: • What math skills do children develop with STEM instruction? • What are the benefits to children's math skills through STEM instruction? This research has been divided into two parts, the theoretical and the research. Finally, a model for teaching mathematics to preschool children (4-6), including STEM education, is proposed. This specific teaching model aims to teach numbers 1-5 to kindergarten children. Our main goal is both number recognition and quantitative matching. The teaching is mainly based on STEM activities and we invest in developing robot programming skills using Bee –Bot.
