Abstract The greatest number of males in relation to females and their smaller size due to their premature sexual maturation are the two major problems for the productivity of sea bass cultures. In addition the manner of the sex determination has yet to be fully determines and is an area of great research interest. The factors which affect the sex ratio have already been studied but the manner in which the sex ratio might affect other parameters is unknown this far. In this experiment we studied whether the sex ratio might affect the bodily growth and sexual maturation in sea bass. By selecting males and females of the same age and size three separate groups were created ( each comprising of 2 duplicates), more precisely 2 single sex cultures( one male and one female) and a mixed sex culture ( with a sex ratio 1:1) Once more the smaller size of males in relation to females and their smaller specific growth rate were verified. Males reached maturity during the first year of their life without having attained their marketable weight whereas females reached maturity, having already reached their marketable weight, during the second year of their life. The reproductive maturation of members of both sexes was not affected by the sex ratio. However, the sex ratio had an impact on the bodily growth of females. More precisely, females present a greater growth in the absence of males, an observation that could be related to the presence of males, their sperm or their hormones. On the contrary sex ratio had no impact on the bodily growth of males
