Abstract |
Wind energy is considered as an environmentally friendly and clean energy to
tackle climate change, but without proper spatial planning it can have particularly
adverse effects on biodiversity and nature conservation. Greece, as a country with
high wind potential, in recent years has attracted a lot of investment interest in the
development of wind farms without fully implementing though the appropriate
regulatory framework to ensure all efforts to protect biodiversity, resulting in the
emergence of a major issue concerning the conflict between energy interests and
nature protection. In this thesis, we examine the effects of the development of wind
power plants on nine large birds of prey, known for their adverse conservation status
either in Greece only or globally, and vulnerable to the effects of wind energy
infrastructure. Through spatial analyses, we examined the degree of overlap of wind
turbines from any licensing category with sensitivity zones around known nesting
sites of all nine species and estimated the overall impact that they will have under
the hypothetical implementation scenario of all planned projects. At the same time,
we proceeded to the production of different sensitivity maps both based on the
known nesting sites of these species and also based on a model for predicting the
distribution of these species in Greece. Overall, we found that the percentage of
potential impact of wind turbines in the total territories of the study species reaches
64.46%, while for each species separately, the total impact is at least 30% for its
territories in total. From the sensitivity maps we found that the total overlap
between located wind farms and territories is between 8-10%, while even with the
complete exclusion of the study sensitivity zones from the spatial siting of wind
farms, Greece's overall energy target is met by at least 4 times. We conclude that
given the conservation status of the study species and all the other threats they
receive, the development of wind energy in Greece can lead to extremely adverse
effects on these species if appropriate measures of proper spatial planning using
environmental criteria are not taken.
