Abstract Web services are an emerging technology which attracts much attention from both the research and the industry sectors in recent years. The exploitation of web services as components in web applications facilitates development and supports applications interoperability regardless of platform and programming language. The open standard Web Services Description Language (WSDL) provides a well-defined way to describe web services and make them available to end users through an interface. The World Wide Web is the universe of information and services to the general public. Consequently, access to and usability of web services by all citizens, including groups at risk of exclusion such as disabled and older people, becomes imperative. However, the web services development standards which have been elaborated so far do not take into account the fact that the provided content and the functionality and with which the end user interacts should be accessible to people with disabilities. Moreover, the compliance of the development process with such standards is usually partial, and as a result the final product cannot be used effectively. In this context, the aim of this work has been the development of a technical solution that allows the semi-automated enrichment of web services standards with the additional required information to support accessibility. As a result, the necessary meta-data are provided to ensure that accessible user interfaces to web services can be developed. The platform myWebAccess provides a mechanism for the semi-automated “repair” of web services in order to support accessible interfaces that conform with the de facto standard of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0). In this way, it achieves the expected enhancement of the interaction quality for specific categories of users, including people with visual and motor disabilities, and the further utilization of different input and output channels (e.g., mobile phone with browser). With this approach, web users can create a personalized environment containing their favorite services (offered by third parties), in order to interact with them through interfaces appropriate for specific usage characteristics.
