Abstract

The first successful birth occurred in 1978 as a result of a natural cycle IVF. Since then, as experience has accumulated, great progress has been achieved in the field and the use of ovarian stimulation strategies has been adopted to achieve synchronous development of multiple follicles. However, quite few complications and risks for the woman’s health and life are recorded in the literature, as a result of ovarian stimulation. These risks are short and long-term as well. This study aims to record and present these risks and examine the bioethical issues, which arise. Autonomy of the infertile woman and couple, consent, as well as the modern practice in Greece are the main ethical concerns of this study. In addition, the role of the physician, the doctor-patient relationship in applying assisted reproductive technology and the limits between research and therapy in the field are examined. After noticing the necessity of regulation and insurance of basic ethical values, the establishment of a ¨doctor-consultant¨ specialization is proposed. The doctor consultant is expected to ensure the good medical practice and the respect for the basic bioethical principles. At the end of this study, Greek legislation concerning assisted reproduction is discussed highlighting the crucial role of the Greek state in regulating appliance of ART in a modern ¨trade-like¨ reality.
