Abstract Empirical studies focusing on progressive chronic illness have addressed patient empowerment as a process of personal transformation. However, research on empowerment of individuals facing stigmatized and stigmatizing illness, such as HIV/AIDS, is limited. Consequently, accurate information and awareness of the relevant issues, is lacking. Additionally, there is little discussion of the field-based difficulties in gathering data over time and across different periods of life and lived experiences. Applying the Kantian concept of a person as someone who exercises practical reasoning and Rawls’ claim that each individuals’ potential is fulfilled in interaction with others, in the present study we argue that personal transformation and empowerment is a matter of “being a self-authenticating source of valid claims” recognized as such by others within the context of reciprocal relationships of mutual respect. Data were collected from ten semi-structured interviews with four newly diagnosed and six chronic HIV positive individuals, some with a history of AIDS, active members of an NGO engaged in informing the public and advocating patients’ rights. In the analysis, we examined the process of empowerment “as it appears”, following the systemic approach that addresses the belief systems (which influence individual identity) in the context of the social setting (group identity). Our phenomenology-based investigation employed the Σελίδα 2 methodological principle of bracketing, where findings are reported in terms of the participants’ life-world. As a result, we describe a number of features that are of direct relevance with the management of the condition that follows diagnosis, as well as the adoption of new factors that open up further reflection to ones’ conscious life. Our findings support the notion that by internalizing the human rights into a “sense of justice”, we ultimately realize our own conceptualization of the good through co-operative activities with others, as “free and equal” individuals. This has the potential to result in a society much more stable than any utilitarian approach may attempt to forge.
