Abstract In the present scientific dissertation a method for the intramolecular cyclization of conjugated allenones into furans catalyzed by Au nanoparticles is presented for the first time. Such reaction has been previously reported under homogeneous gold catalysts, but in several cases problems were encountered. In the presence of Au nanoparticles however, the cyclization of conjugated allenones into furans occurs in high yields under mild conditions, using 1 mol% of Au/TiO2 and dichloromethane as solvent. A variety of monosubstituted and disubstituted (1,1- and 1,3-) allenones were tested and the final products were formed quantitatively in most of the cases. Mechanistic studies have shown that the reaction mechanism differs from the one proposed for homogeneous Au catalysts. The low cost, ease of use and removal and recyclability of the Au/TiO2 catalyst, combined with the mild reaction conditions (room temperature) and the fact that there is no need for chromatographic separation of the products, in most of the cases, or external additives or ligands makes this methodology quite advantageous.
