Abstract Abuse within the family takes place behind closed doors, so it remains a very well kept family secret, which is quite difficult to uncover. However, school environment is considered an important pole of available information mainly because children spend most of their time there and they also exhibit a variety of behaviors indicative of their traumatic experiences. The purpose of the present study was to examine the emotional, social and cognitive difficulties abused children exhibit at school. In particular, there were examined 38 physically abused children living with their families, 36 physically abused children living in institutions and 37 non abused children. The purpose was to investigate possible differences between groups regarding levels of anxiety and depression, social difficulties and deficits concerning their attention and memory abilities. Moreover, teachers' accuracy in estimating the difficulties of abused children were examined. Children’s ages varied from 6 to 12 years old. According to the results, abused children exhibit higher anxiety and depression levels and they also face more cognitive deficits which negatively affect their school performance. Furthermore, children who have been abused exhibit more aggressive behavior at school, however they do not seem to realize their own difficulties. Regarding children who have been removed from the abusive environment and live in institutions, it seems that their difficulties are even more intense. The present study concludes that children who have been abused within their family exhibit a variety of indicative behaviors at school, which, if properly and carefully used, could be extremely helpful in the detection of child abuse cases. Moreover, valuable information for designing intervention programs for abused children are proposed.
