Abstract This diploma thesis was conducted at the Hellenic Mediterranean University in the Technology and Photonics Technology Center. The purpose of this diploma thesis was firstly the synthesis of a novel perylene-based carboxyl salt that was used as a surfactant to optimize the exfoliation of graphite in water and other solvents. The first part analyses the carbon and its allotropic forms, perylene as a compound as well as its functions and its uses as a surfactant. Next, the experimental part describes the procedures for the synthesis of the surfactant and the preparation of the dispersions for the optimization of the exfoliation of graphite. After the finding of the optimum conditions for the exfoliation of graphite in solvent water, organic solvents were tested. Finally, all experimental data are analysed in the last part. The final products were characterized by the methods Infrared (IR) and Ultraviolet (UV-vis).
