Abstract The continuous and undesirable use of fossil fuels not only leads to their inevitable depletion but also contributes to the environmental degradation due to the increased emissions of harmful gases produced through their combustion. Therefore, the development of innovative technologies for energy production is an important issue of modern society. An alternative and the most advantageous renewable energy source is solar energy, as it is abundant and does not produce any pollutants when converted in other forms of energy. The basic way of exploiting and converting this energy is through solar cells, but the manufacturing costs are quite high. However, 3rd Generation Solar Cells are manufactured in mild chemical conditions, thus reducing their cost as well as their manufacturing time. The most promising class of these kind of cells are the perovskite solar cells, especially those with inverted structure due to some beneficial characteristics, namely reduced hysteresis effect and milder manufacturing conditions. Nevertheless, the use of fullerene derivatives, which are particularly expensive, as electron transport layer (ETL) is required. The present thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of chromophores for their incorporation in planar inverted structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs), in order to replace the frequently used PC71BM. Particularly, a porphyrin-pyrene dyad with Donor-Acceptor-Donor properties was prepared and TAS (Transient Absorption Spectroscopy) studies were performed indicating a faster electron transfer from the perovskite layer to the dyad ETL compared to those containing PC71BM. The fabrication of p-SCs based on the application of this new dyad as ETL and the measurement of their photovoltaic parameters are in progress. Furthermore, an n-type dyad consisting of perylene-pyrene chromophores was synthesized and characterized. The TAS measurements that were conducted showed once again that a shorter time is required for the electrons to get transferred from xi the perovskite layer towards the ETL compared to the systems where PC711BM (fullerene derivative) is used. Finally, the study of this compound as the electron transport material within a planar inverted perovskite solar cell device is also in progress.
