Abstract The object of this study was the determination of arsenic compounds in samples of marine macroalgae from Thermaikos Gulf. Specifically, the total arsenic content was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) after microwave digestion. The determination of arsenic compounds was made through the coupling of liquid chromatography and ICP/MS, after the extraction of samples with water. These two methods were optimized and successfully used to analyze the same kind of samples in the past. The content of total arsenic in samples of macroalgae was found to be lower than that reported in studies of the same or similar samples from the Mediterranean region. It is shown, as in previous studies, that there is a tendency of algae to accumulate a larger quantity of arsenic in the winter. According to the results, a significant effect of the sea current in the transport of arsenic along the Thermaikos Gulf is suggested. Arseno-sugars, the characteristic compounds of arsenic in marine algae, were found in all samples. Also, inorganic arsenic was detected in thirteen samples and it was the largest fraction of the total content of arsenic in both types of the algae Cystoseira. Finally, low extraction efficiencies in some samples are mainly attributed to the physical condition of the samples and difficulties encountered during the pre-processing.
