Abstract The purpose of this study was the comparison of electrospray and sonic spray ionization techniques for the analysis of solutions with C5 (bpyr) 22 + dications of varying concentrations and BrtV ions, STFA and BrO3- ions. The spectra received for each solution using the two techniques were compared with respect to the intensity of the peaks and the sensitivity of each technique, as well as for the fragmentation caused with increasing capillary temperature and source fragmentation voltage. From the results of the experiments it was concluded that the sonic spray ionization source provides higher signal for the analysis of the C5(bpyr) 22+ dications and BrtV anions up to two orders of magnitude in comparison to the electrospray ionization source. On the contrary, the electrospray ionization source results in higher intensity for the STFA ions. Moreover, the fragmentation of the BrO3- and STFA ions increases with capillary temperature, especially when using the ESI source, while the formation of the ion pair [C5 (bpyr) 2BrO3]+ is enhanced. Increase of the source fragmentation voltage causes a reduction of the signal and thus, fragmentation, again higher when using the ESI source for the analysis of STFA, BrO3-, as well as for [C5 (bpyr) 2BrO3]+. In addition, with another experiment the most optimized position of the SSI nebulizer was confirmed and it was concluded that the maximum signal is achieved when the nebulizer is placed 0.5 mm on the left of the entrance of the mass spectrometer and 1.0 mm away from it. In general, sonic spray ionization technique is very promising and has many advantages compared to electrospray, since it can be used for the analysis of samples which are unstable under at high temperature and voltage.
