Abstract Metal phosphonate chemistry has ben rapidly developing during the last years due to several potential applications in various technological fields, such as: pharmaceutics (osteoporosis drugs), ion exchange, gas absorption/storage, proton conductivity, catalysis, chemical water treatment, etc. In the present Thesis, the synthesis of metal phosphonate coordination polymers and complexes is described, by using three different phosphonate ligands and divalent metal ions (Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Co, Zn, Cu). Depending on the synthesis design, co-ligands have been used. The carboxyphosphonate ligand N,N-bisphosphonomethyl glycine (BPMGLY) formed four new compounds with the metal ions Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ και Pb2+. The bis-phosphonate ligand 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) gave three new compounds, the first one with Co2+, and imidazole as a co-ligand, the second one with Zn2+ and 2,2’-bpy as co-ligand and the third one with Zn2+ and 4,4’-bpy as co-ligand. In addition, the mono-phosphonate ligand vinyl phosphonic acid (VPA) formed two new compounds with 1,10-phenanthroline as co-ligand and the metal ions Cu2+ και Zn2+. The physicochemical characterization and crystal structures are also presented of the following compounds:{Ca(BPMGLY)(H2O)}n, {Sr(BPMGLY)(H2O)}n, {Pb(BPMGLY)(H2O)}n, {Ba3.5(BPMGLY)26(H2O)}n, {[(HEDP)(Im)3Co2]·3H2O)}n, {[Zn(2,2-bpy)(HEDP)(H2O)]·3H2O)}n, {[Zn(4,4’-bpy)(HEDP)]·3H2O}n, [(VPA)(phen)Cu(Η2Ο)]·4Η2O και {[(VPA)4(phen)4Zn5(H2O)4]·(Η2Ο)2(NO3)2}n. Lastly, proton conductivity and catalytic properties were studied for selected compounds.
