Abstract The mosquito Aedes albopictus is an adaptable organism, which primarily feeds on blood from mammals and other vertebrates and is considered to be one of the best invasive species. It expanded globally mainly during the last three decades, because of human activities. It is considered epidemiologically important and dangerous, because it can transmit numerous viruses and filarial nematodes and was responsible for the outbreak of Chikungunya fever in 2006 – 2007 worldwide. The management of mosquito populations contributes to the control of the diseases they transmit, with insecticides being the first line of defense. The contribution of insecticides in the control of Aedes populations was significant for several years, until resistance was developed. In this study, we tried to analyze and characterize the resistance of A. albopictus to larvicide Temephos, in a population which was collected from Greece, using the RNA – Seq technique. We conducted a differential expression analysis between two populations, which had the same genetic background and differences in insecticide levels. Many transcripts, which were found highly up – regulated, were related to detoxification genes. The most up – regulated transcript was related to carboxyl/cholinesterase CCEAE6A. These findings allow us to characterize the resistance of A. albopictus to larvicide Temephos as metabolic. The results of this analysis can be used for the early detection of resistance and the more effective control of A. albopictus. Its control is urgent, but can be better achieved through integrated management.
