Abstract Atomically thin tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a promising new material with excellent optoelectronic properties for future nanoelectronic systems. In this thesis, the spatial non-uniformity in the photoluminescence (PL) and Raman properties, not only of the physical but also of intentionally created via femtosecond laser ablation, boundaries of tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayers is studied. Moreover, we investigate the existence of quasiparticles that individually consist of two electron-hole pairs, known as biexcitons, in mechanically exfoliated WS2 flakes from 78 K up to room temperature by performing temperature and power dependent PL measurements. Finally, we investigate different cases of vertical WS2 heterostructures in a range of temperatures from 4K up to 300K and we examine the influence of the dielectric environment on the spin-valley polarization degree, as well as the intervalley electron/hole-phonon scattering mechanisms.
