Abstract

Purpose. To evaluate the VFQ-25 questionnaire as an instrument for visual alterations in patients with diabetic retinopathy after panretinal photocoagulation treatment. Methods. In eleven (11) diabetic patients with indication, we applied the PRP treatment, using argon laser. The questionnaire was completed twice. The first time just before the beginning of the treatment and the second time one month, at least, after the conclusion. Visual deteriorating factors not connected with PRP bring to the exclusion of these patients from the study. Results. In the sequent table there are the visual evaluation results. We consider amelioration or deterioration, a difference more than 10 points between the two interviews. As we notice there is a total improvement of general vision in this group of diabetic patients. Improvement we have also in mental health, role difficulties and driving. Unimproved state there is in general vision, ocular pain, near and distance activities, social functioning, dependency, and color vision. A doubt there is only with peripheral vision, that shows a small deterioration. These findings add support to the use of NEI-VFQ as a valuable measure of self-reported impairment, but the sample number must be more numerous.
