Abstract |
Consciousness is a phenomenon of unknown causation and ontology. It varies in interpretations that range from its acknowledgment as a fundamental substance of reality to just an illusion. Even if the nature of consciousness is not yet conceived, its presence is almost inseparable from human hypostasis. Neuroscience offers a large number of information regarding the consequences of brain function and alterations on conscious experience. Nevertheless, it does not offer conclusive evidence about the possibility of consciousness being identified either as a brain function or as an independent substance. Findings from the study of altered or non-ordinary states of consciousness may form a decisive discovery mean of the intrinsic characteristics and the nature of consciousness. The present thesis focuses on the study of the near-death experiences and is mainly based on the current neuroscientific findings as well as philosophical, psychological, theological and new scientific approaches. The end purpose of the present work is the best possible formation of a conclusive overview for the possible directions that consciousness examination may follow, based on the information and data provided from this peculiar near-death phenomenon. This study concludes with the view that even though the full spectrum of near-death experiences' characteristics cannot be explained from the neuroscientific community so far, this is not to be seem as an impossible task. The attainment of this explanatory aspiration seems most possible under a framework of a multidisciplinary cooperation. Nevertheless, until scientific research proves that a complete explanation of the conscious phenomena is indeed possible, an open attitude towards all the metaphysical approaches should be kept.
