Abstract Nurses’ work in hospitals is characterized by numerous obligations, demanding working hours and numerous exposures to harmful factors and hazards. The above seems to affect both physical and mental health to the nursing staff. The purpose of the current study was to present the existing situation regarding the nurses’ occupational health and safety of the General Hospital of Chania "Agios Georgios" and the association of the risk factors in the workplace with the professional performance and the appearance of health problems in the nurses of the hospital. The study population consisted of 85 nurses from Pathology and Surgery Departments of the General Hospital of Chania "Agios Georgios". The survey was conducted in Chania, Crete, in the period from 02/2018 to 04/2018. It is a case study where cross-sectional methodology was followed. A questionnaire for subjective occupational risk assessment was used to collect the data, which is based on the questionnaires from the personal occupational risk booklet. The majority of nurses consider biological risks as extremely high (96.5%). 25.9% of respondents report that the temperature is high in summer, as well as 22.4% state high the humidity in winter and 20.0% consider the noise as intense. 74.1% declared dust as the most frequent exposure. A high percentage mention body posture while working as tiring (58.8%), 78.8% report the existence of manual weights manipulation, while the majority of workers are employed with rotating shift system (81.2%). The working rythms are self-defined as intense (78.8%) and appear to have a statistically significant impact on the existence of an accident at work (p <0.001), as the same happens with the responsibility rate (p = 0.019) which is reported as high (85.9%). Factors that can cause an accident at work include dangerous tools (68.2%), flammable materials (65.9%) and the risk of material fall (62.4%). From the total number of nurses with an occupational accident, 83.3% of the accidents were associated with needle stick injuries or injuries from sharp objects, with a lower percentage of musculoskeletal problems (16.7%) and falls/slips (16.7%). Based on nurses' reports, high levels of physical problems (fatigue, headache) at work (67.0%) and also mental/emotional symptoms (stress, exhaustion) (33.0%) were recorded. Occupational risk assessment constitutes the basis for planning interventions in the working environment. The improvement of occupational health and safety in hospitals is highly important for the prevention of nurses’ risks in order to ensure their health.
