Abstract One of the most renowned art collections of the 18th century was the one belonging to the Earls of Pembroke. Sheltered in Wilton House, the Pembroke collection consisted of antiquities and modern sculpture, paintings, drawings, and prints. This research attempts to examine the Pembroke collection as a whole, investigating the ways it was organized and made public from the beginning of the 1700s until the end of the century. Moreover, the dissertation seeks to answer questions concerning the possibility of creating a narrative of art history through the way the objects are displayed and how the collector’s personal and family history can be integrated into this narrative. The main goals of this thesis are first, to provide additional information and reflection on the already published studies about the Pembroke collection and second, to examine examples that were until now neglected by research.
