Abstract	A 2-year study(1990-1992) on the trophic relationships of 12 demersal fish species that occupy the continental shelf in Iraklion Bay. Two fixed stations on the commercial fishing grounds in the bay, covering a depth range fron 25-85m, were sampled monthly during the daytime, using a demersal otter trawl. The objective of the study was the investigation of the feeding relationships of the sympatric fish species and the determination of any underlying patterns of predation on benthic animals, using both numerical and gravimetric stomach contents analysis. Particular attention has been paid to the concept of niche segregetion and to the determination of the existence of resource partitioning between the examined fish species. Date an fish body lenght significantly affected the proportion of full/empty stomachs, total weight of stomach contents and total number of prey items per predator stomach, ina a different way for each of the fish species. Although decapods were the dominant part of the diet, morphological observations and stomach contents analysis revealed tha the fish species were segregated into two different feeding modes. There was no noticeable monthly variation in the dietary composition of the fish investigated when the major prey taxa were taken into consideration, while the contribution of prey species exhibited significant monthly changes. These results led to the conclusion that fish each month, exploited those prey species with relatively high abundance and availability in the enviroment.(Abstract truncated)
