Abstract In the present study the effects of a series of essential oils on growth and structure and function of the photosynthetic apparatus of the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was studied. More specifically Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Oreganum vulgaris (oregano), Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary), Pinus patula (pine), Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus), Origanum majorana (marjoram), Melaleuca alternifolia (tea-tree), Zingiber officinale (ginger), Aniba rosaeodora (rosewood), Illicium verum (aniseed- China star) ηαζ Salvia officinalis (sage). Activity of these essential oils was measured by the use of induced fluorescence measurements, photosynthetic pigments quantification and photosynthetic rate of oxygen production. Growth of the microalga was studied as well. Results showed that the presence of essential oils inhibits photosystem II activity. Inhibition appears in the first hour of experiments initialization. IC50 values were calculated by photosynthetic rate of oxygen production values. Rosemary proved to be the most effective essential oil with IC50 equal to 13,1 ppm. Aniseed and pine essential oils showed IC50 values lower than 20,0 ppm. All essential oils, apart from rosewood, exhibited IC50 values between 20,1 and 80,0 ppm, while rosewood’s was higher than 100,0 ppm. These results show that essential oils are possible candidates to be used as alternative solution against the conventional herbicides, without impacts in the environment and human health.
