Abstract Recent studies of our research group have shown that gold nanoparticles activate the Si-B bond of PhMe2Si-Bpin complex, with subsequent addition of alkynes and cyclic ethers. In the present work, we studied the reaction of PhMe2Si-Bpin with carbonyl compounds in the presence of gold nanoparticles. The formation of silyloxy pinacol-type coupling products was observed in high yields. The reaction probably proceeds through a free radical mechanism as shown by preliminary experiments using a cyclopropyl-substituted aldehyde which underwent ring opening silaboration. A further indication for the existence of a radical pathway, was the trapping of intermediate by the free radical tempo. This reaction is unknown in the literature and can be utilized for the development of new methodologies in organic synthesis.
