Abstract |
The particular thesis constitutes a thorough examination and classification of the
genomic properties of A/B compartments in eukaryotic genes and particularly in
human genes. The main goal was to identify differences on the way genes are
distributed in the compartments. Those differences elaborated mainly on the size of
the genes, the complexity of the genes (number of exons/introns, number of
alternative transcripts, GC content etc), conservation of genes on those regions,
chromosomal characteristics (nucleosome positioning) and variation of
compartments coordinates in different cell types. Consequently, the genes and
transcripts included in each of the six subcompartments that A/B compartments are
divided (Rao et al., 2014) were identified and analyzed. Then, in accordance with
the findings an association of clusters of genes or transcripts, having specific
properties concerning the aforementioned features, with particular
subcompartments was attempted. The final objective was to unveil undiscovered
features of those regions and try to correlate gene functions with structure. These
associations could end up being indicative of a possible compartmentalization of
the three dimensional organization of the nucleus.
