Abstract |
The photodissociation of halogen-containing molecules, especially those containing Cl and Br, has received the attention of scientists due to the role these species play in stratospheric ozone depletion. Bromine is said to be 40 times more effective than chlorine on the destruction of ozone. In this master’s thesis, I present results on the photodissociation dynamics of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 at 193 nm using the Velocity Map Imaging technique. Werecorded images of C+, CH+, CH+2, Br+, CH2Br+ and CH2Br+2 for dibromomethane and H+, C+, CH+, Br+, CBr+, CHBr+2 and CHBr+2 for bromoform. By analyzing the kinetic energy release of the photofragments, we were able to identify the most probable dissociation channels for both molecules. The first chapter introduces the molecular dynamics field, as well as fundamental theory for the photodissociation of molecules and the Velocity Map Imaging technique. The second chapter contains the experimental setup that we utilized. In the third and fourth chapters, I present the results of the photodissociation of dibromomethane and bromoform with an ArF excimer laser, i.e. the KER distributions of the ions and the most probable processes and channels.
