Abstract This current work is an undergraduate thesis, which took place at the laboratory of Giannis Zacharakis at Laboratory of Bioimaging and Molecular Imaging (LBMI) at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser-Foundation of Research (IESL-FORTH), with supervisors Evangelos Marakis and Mikis Mylonakis. The purpose of the thesis is the familiarization with the experimental and the numerical foundations of the Optical Physics. The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section is the study of the scattering properties of disorder media at a numerical level, using MATLAB programming. First, 3D optical diffusive media are constructed, composed by spherical scatterers inside them. The inhomogeneities are differences on the refractive indices between the background and the spheres and are uniformly distributed inside the medium volume. Consequently, electromagnetic beam propagates in the medium and the ballistic light attenuation is measured, and the scattering mean free path is extracted. The second section is the experimental one, which is a part of an ongoing PhD thesis on the construction of an Adaptive Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) set up. The main aim is the familiarization with the experimental research. The goal of this part is the construction and the characterization of scattering disorder media with the appropriate characteristics, which are going to be inserted in this set up.
