Abstract

The smooth snake Coronella austriaca (Serpentes, Colubridae) is distributed throughout central, southern Europe and western Asia. So far, phylogenetic studies, based on mitochondrial DNA, have been carried out on this species in Greece, the Iberian Peninsula, Poland and England, leaving unstudied a large portion of its distribution especially in the eastern Mediterranean region. The present study aims to cover this gap, as well as to supplement the existing knowledge about its phylogeny and phylogeography. For this reason, total genomic DNA was extracted from 168 samples originated from the Balkans, eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia and a large part of Europe. Two mitochondrial (cyt b, 16S) and six nuclear (BDNF, NKTR, RAG1, RAG2, MC1R, PRLR) markers used for several phylogenetic and chronophylogenetic analyses. Τheir results revealed the presence of several well supported clades from Anatolia, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the Balkans and the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, the results of dating analysis confirmed the recent diversification of the species during Pliocene and Pleistocene, as well as the role of the Balkans and Caucasus region as refugia during Pleistocene. Furthermore, cryptic diversity revealed in regions of Turkey and the Balkans. Considering the results of phylogenetic and species delimitation analysis, we discuss also, whether C. austriaca represents a species complex or a single species.
