Abstract This research seeks to highlight the social consequences of war crimes against civilian objects and public and private property in the civilian population. International law criminalizes as war crimes the acts which are directed at material goods and values but in a way that goes beyond what is necessary for the war, creating conditions that endanger the lives and survival of the people in a war zone. Famine is probably one of the worst of the consequences that can occur in a society which is plagued by warfare. Through the analysis of the historical example and the consequences of the Great Famine in Greece during the Second World War, the importance of these war crimes is being revealed, as is the impact of economic sanctions on a civilian population.
