Abstract Hemoglobinopathies represent a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases with a wide range of clinical manifestations. They are divided into two main categories which are Thalassemias and Sickle cell syndromes. The patients with hemoglobinopathies are classified as patients with chronic diseases due to the high risk for serious illness, complications or even death in case of infections. Although the vaccination of those sufferers is very important, it's far nevertheless at low leves in lots of countries. The aim of this study was to check the vaccination coverage of patients with hemoglobinopathies in Crete according to the National Vaccination Program in 2022. Furthermore the patients were asked for their personal opinion about vaccinations. In cases of a negative opinion they had to tell the reasons that led to it. A retrospective observational study was performed. The data were obtained from the patients’medical records and from a personal interview with each patient. A total of 189 people were interviewed. The most important conclusions from the study were that: The patients in Crete are vaccinated in a greater way than patients with hemoglobinopathies who are monitored by various specialized departments around the world. The comparisons mainly involved the vaccination against influenza, Haemophilus influenzae, Hepatitis B, meningococcal and pneumococcal disease. However, the vaccination for some diseases in Crete proved to be deficient, such as the vaccination for DtaP-IPV, MMR, VAR, HPV, HZV and Hepatitis A. In addition, this study showed that the General Hospital of Chania proved to be more consistent with the most vaccinations compared to the Venizeleio Hospital of Heraklion. Therefore, the vaccination of the patients depends a lot by the information is given from the attending physicians. Another important observation is that for the most vasccines was a clear age difference in vaccination compliance. Furthermore this study showed that patients without a spleen were vaccinated against encapsuled pathogens at moderate to high levels. More specifically, vaccination against pneumococcus ranged from 93% to 96%, for meningococcus grom 50% to 79% and for haemophilus at 64%. About the second part of this study, the most patients had a positive opinion about the necessity of vaccinations. A few of them had a negative opinion due to fear of possible side effects, mainly to the Covid-19 vaccine.
