Abstract	The study explores views of the athletic and social history of three important local sport clubs in the city of Rethymnon, Crete (Asteras, Rethymniakos and Athletic Gymnastic Club of Rethymnon). It investigates the social and sport functions of the clubs, their administrative structures, their impacts on the local community, the social backgrounds of their members and the processes of professionalization and commercialization of sport clubs in the post-Junta period. Moreover, the analysis focused on the biographical narratives of the protagonists of the teams illuminating peculiar characteristics of the local athletic activities and the ways by which narrators negotiate the clubs identities.
