Abstract |
This thesis is dedicated to the numerical study of shock waves in thermonuclear
plasma. We briefly discuss the nuclear reactions relevant to fusion, and the
nuclear reaction rates which we implement in our numerical codes. We present
the mathematical description of the plasma, which is based on the two-fluid and
Magnetohydrodynamic approximations. The fluid equations for the various plasma
species are derived from Boltzmann’s equation. These system of fluid equations coupled
with Maxwell’s equations are numerically solved using a finite volume method
in space and Runge-Kutta in time. The numerical results presented in this thesis
consist of two parts. In the first part we present numerical results on the shock waves
in plasma, in Cartesian and Cylindrical geometries, with and without magnetic
fields. A comparison on the numerical results obtained by the two approximations,
Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) and multi-fluid approximations, is presented. In the
second part we implement the alpha particles generated by nuclear reactions as an
additional fluid to our multi-fluid approximation of the plasma. We present numerical
results on the production of the alpha particles, for plasmas relevant to magnetic
fusion and to inertial fusion. and study the the effect that the magnetic field has
on the alphas. Finally we present conclusions on this numerical study, and give
directions for possible continuation of this work.
