Abstract

Nurseries are small organizations which provide care and education to children aged 0 to 4 years. When their programs are qualitative and successfully meet the needs of young children, they can provide many benefits to their development in the short and long term. Nowadays, the needs of children in early care and education have been modified due to the changes taking place in our society and economy. The introduction and implementation of innovations in nurseries can significantly improve program quality and help services adapt to the needs of the young children today. Staff, parents, children and administrators should work effectively together aiming for a successful implementation of innovations in nurseries. The principals can play a big role in coordinating all this. Besides their administrative duties, they should exercise leadership that promotes the implementation of innovations. This study researches the views of principals regarding the introduction and implementation of innovations in the nurseries, as well as their attitudes and roles regarding the implementation of innovations. This study is a qualitative research, its sample consists of principals of public nurseries of the Municipality of Attica and the data was collected using semi-structured interviews. From the results it can be concluded that the principals participated in the study recognize how important is the implementation of innovations in their nurseries and consider the role of leadership very important for the innovation achievement.
