Abstract Polymeric membranes, especially those are are pre functionalized with an anchoring functionality are promising materials in developing reproducible biosensors. They are relatively inexpensive, can be produced in a very reproducicble way, have high surface area, and are both mechanically and chemically stable. The surface of these materials contains functional groups, which can bind covalently enzymes, leading to their immobilization and stabilization. The functionalization of polymeric membranes provides the possibility of introducing new functional groups on their surface, lending them even more attractive immobilization matrices for enzymes. An increase in the number of surface groups allows for the stronger interaction with enzymes via covalent immobilization. Therefore the conjugation of chemically modified polymeric membranes with enzymes can lead to the development of biosensors with very high degree of reproducibility, sensitivity and stability. In this study, pre-functionalized polymeric membranes have been utilized for the development of glucose biosensor for the detection and monitoring of glucose. Glucoze oxidase was adsorbed and covalently immobilized via carbodiimide chemistry on the polymeric membranes. The electrochemical characteristics of both biosensors and their ability to immobilize enzyme molecules were compared. In both cases it has been shown that the polymeric membranes can be utilized as obtained for the development of advanced biosensor systems.
