Abstract |
The use of hydrogels as scaffolds for biomineralization has found a great application in
both Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine for the repair and treatment of many
types of tissues. In the present work we studied peptide materials that are attached to
protecting groups and which are self-assembled in biocompatible and stable nanostructures
to be suitable for tissue enginnering applications. Specifically, the individual (Asp) aspartic
residue is studied which has been shown to lead to the formation of well-ordered fibrous
structures with two fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) protecting groups or benzylcarboxyls
one at the N-terminal and one at the carboxyl group. Therefore, many amino acid and small
peptides which are modified with protecting groups have relatively fast self-assembly and
exhibit remarkable physicochemical properties leading to three-dimensional (3-D) networks,
trapping solvent molecules and forming hydrogels. In this case, the self-assembling fibrous
structures are aimed at the ability to bind calcium and which will act as nucleation points for
the binding of phosphate anions.
The adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of prosteoblastic cells make the hydrogel
a promising scaffold for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
