Abstract Introduction: Health is a state of ultimate physical, mental and social wellness, not only in the absence of some disease or disability. When using the term school health, we are referring to health existing in the school environment. There are many accidents happening within the school environment. The need for a school nurse within a school unit is crucial, in order to take care the children, be proactive to avoid possible accidents and promote the health and wellness of those involved with the school unit. Purpose: It is the report of opinions and ideas of teachers in Primary Schools within the Heraklion district, as well as the archive of danger factors for the health and safety of students within the school premises. Material-Methods: For the collection of data, a close-end questionnaire will be distributed consisting of 149 questions. In this study, a random sample was taken from the total number of schools of Primary Education within the Heraklion district. The desired sample of teachers was calculated based on the influence of each school; therefore, the sample was collected from 12-sectioned schools. After a random sampling and using a random numbers chart, there was a selection of nine 12-sectioned schools and in addition, the teachers involved with the sampled schools. At the same time, the study expanded in all Primary schools within the Heraklion district and the sample was collected taking into account the Headmasters of all Primary schools within the Heraklion district. The data entry was conducted using Excel spreadsheets, while the statistical analysis was conducted using the IBMSPESSStatistics 24.0 programme. Results: The sample consisted of 103 teachers from 9 12-sectioned primary schools and 27 headmasters from all over Heraklion district. The teachers had very little training (45, 4%) on first aid issues. In 96,8% of the schools taking part in the study, owned a first aid kit and 78,3% stated that it was fully equipped, whereas half of them supported that there was first aid room within the school unit. Half of the interviewee teachers when asked, “they did not have” general first aid knowledge and this is concluded by the fact that they did not have training into any first aid course. Most accidents happen during breaks 88,3% of the times and within the school yard 60,2% of the times. The headmasters seem to protect and act more within the school area when it comes to health and safety issues. Moreover, the primary schools management presented the highest average knowledge regarding health and safety issues – in comparison to teachers who were not in a senior position. Lastly, teachers consider necessary the use of nurse staff within the school units, with 75,4% of them stating “I totally agree” and 23,8% stating “I agree”. Conclusions: Teachers in primary schools have no training in being proactive when it comes to accidents and their treatment. Most accidents occurred during breaks within the schoolyard. School nurses are now necessary within the school premises.
