Abstract Rapid developments in the science of nanomaterials mark a new era in the field of Biomedical Engineering with questionable consequences in public health. As a result, significant issues about the safety of nanoparticles have arisen because of the numerous properties that are associated to toxicity. Several studies have shown that the same factors that make nanoparticle properties so special could also be responsible for their possible toxicity. Considering the applications of nanomaterials, as well as accidental exposure of the population, it is imperative to explore in depth their safety in biological systems. In this work, first we describe the importance of nanotechnology, we analyze potential trends and applications of nanoparticles and then review the correlation of basic physicochemical properties of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, such as size, surface, shape, charge, crystallinity, agglomeration, solubility with growth and cell toxicity.
