Abstract Nutritional disorders can cause secondary osteoporosis as well as musculoskeletal metabolism dysfunction. The Orthodox Christian Church's fasting consists of abstinence from food and/or food categories for 180/-19 days of total, especially of animal protein and dairy products. This case-control study attempts to investigate the effect of this fasting pattern on musculoskeletal metabolism and bone density. 100 fasters (68 women, 32 men) and 100 non-fasters (66 women, 34 men) over 50 years old (including women in menopause) provided general information, as well as a 3-day food record during a non-fast period. They underwent a clinical examination, biochemical blood tests and DEXA bone densitometry in the lumbar spine and the hips. Results revealed statistically significant differences between non-fasters over fasters for smoking, daily consumption of protein, fat (including polyunsaturated), dietary fibers, vitamins B3, B12, folic acid, D3 & E, as well as for calcium, manganese, magnesium, selenium, iron, and phosphorus. Regarding potassium, fasters achieved the optimal levels. Regarding BMD, statistically significant difference found on fasters’ spines (4%). Inverted image for right femoral neck despite the favorable T-scores over left ones. Nevertheless, abstinence from dairy and animal protein caused did not affect iron, nor on the, already low, D3 blood levels. Orthodox Christian fasting as a “healthy” eating habit seems to contribute favorably to musculoskeletal health, as future studies expected to confirm.
