Abstract In the past few years Greek schools have been accepting a large number of refugee and immigrant children. As a result, there has been an effort into studying the school participation practices of immigrant parents. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the opinions of educators concerning the participation of immigrant parents in the school life. Moreover, the educators’ opinions were associated with the leadership model adopted by the teaching staff and the type of parental involvement established with immigrant parents. In addition, the partnerships among the teaching staff were studied, concerning the participation of immigrant parents, as well as their views on the existing laws defining the parental duties and rights within the school context. Finally, all the above-mentioned opinions were linked with the corresponding leadership model and type of parental participation. To implement the present research project, a qualitative study was conducted using semi- structured interviews. In the study participated 16 educators working in primary education in the region of Heraklion, Crete. Although they were all working in primary education, their placements belonged in four different categories: principals, kindergarten editors, primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers. The results of the study indicated that all participants treat immigrant parents similarly to native parents, without making differentiations. Additionally, a special effort is made, especially from primary school and kindergarten teachers, for immigrant parents to participate more actively in the school life and overcome the barriers that they may face (linguistic, social, emotional, economical). On the contrary, almost all participants stated that parents, both native and immigrant, are not in place of making decisions about the school unit’s function and educational work, due to their lack of education training and knowledge.
