Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and the knowledge of nursing students concerning the smear test, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and the vaccine against the HPV virus. Methods: The study included 321 nursing students of ATEI Thessaloniki between 1/10/2017 and 15/11/2017. A questionnaire was made by choosing questions from equivalent surveys. The survey took place at a nursing school of ATEI Thessaloniki and a hospital named Ippokrateio. Statistic analysis was performed with SPSS v22. Results: 63% of the sample has had smear test and half of the participants knew why people have smear test exactly. In women declining smear test, the reported reasons were “negligence”, “not having sexual contacts” and thought that “it’s not necessary”. 80,5% of the sample states that knows what is HPV virus and 37,7 % was vaccinated against HPV. The main reasons why the sample didn’t want to get the shoot were “the fear of adverse events” and “haven’t been informed enough”. Half of the participants knew that there is a relation between HPV and cervical cancer and are willing to pay the vaccine if they can’t prescribe it. 77,2 % of the sample knew that HPV can infect both women and men and 60,7 % answered that the infection of the HPV can be treated. Concerning the ways that the disease can be transmitted the most common answers were via the sexual partner, the blood transfusion and vertical transfer from mother to child. The minority of the sample answered that the virus can be transferred via asymptomatic persons (10,6%). A big percentage of the sample chose the use of condom and the vaccine as ways to prevent the spread of the virus. 33,44% of the participants states that the vaccine is safe and effective. Finally it turned out Vaccines and Prevention of Infectious Diseases in Childhood and Adolescence Faculty of Medicine – University of Crete 6 that the year of study, the age and the gender (women had better knowledge than the men) affect positively concerning the knowledge of the nursing students about the HPV. Conclusion: The survey showed that there is lack of knowledge about the smear test, the HPV virus and its vaccine. Since the mortality of cervical cancer is big it’s necessary to increase the primary (via vaccination against HPV) and secondary prevention (via the preventive tests of women). Health workers and the whole population have to learn about HPV, especially at early age. Finally, campaigns must occur often and a network of information and prevention needs to be made.
