Abstract In the present thesis the synthesis of four fluorescent heavy metal probes with high selectivity for zinc ions, is described. The compounds are derivatives of 2-aminobenzothiazole that functions as the basic fluorophore unit in each molecule. Their chelator part incorporates the bis-picolylamine moiety. The specific choice of this functional group was based on literature data on its affinity and selectivity for zinc ions. Fluorescence profile studies on these probes revealed that one of the probes behaved as «turn on» sensor, exhibiting an increase in the fluorescence intensity upon increase of the cations’ concentration. The other two, were characterized as “turn off”, given that they exhibit the reverse behavior. Finally, a fourth compound behaved as a “turn on, turning to ratiometric” given that it shifts its mode of detection as the concentration of zinc ions increases for nano- to micromolar levels. The turn on probes may be considered as useful tools for the detection of zinc ions given their sensitivity level (nM) and the mechanism of their response to increasing zinc ion concentrations.
