Abstract In the present study, we are initially attempting to summarize the historical evolution of the concept of proportion in mathematics. Then the theoretical framework is presented in which we relied on the conduct of our research on Secondary School pupils. In our research, students were asked to respond to a brochure of activities with the primary aim of looking at how the concept of proportions of segmentation and segmental speech is perceived. Based on the students’ answers, we chose some of them who participated in a videotape interview aimed at studying students' thinking about the concept of mathematical analogy and solving the difficulties faced by students in the activity booklet. The above actions have improved to a certain extent the students' performance in the handling of the concepts of proportion and ratio of line segments.
