Abstract The generation of custom light fields, based on wavefront shaping techniques often described as structured light, is a topic of wide interest in optics. Βy imprinting a helical phase, shaping can induce a topological charge to the wave. Such waves carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) and exhibit a rotating phase structure as they propagate. Twisting structured light, where the intensity pattern rotates forming a helical pattern, can be generated by superimposing structured light that caries OAM of opposite helicity. Recently a new type of structured light, referred to as Tornado waves (ToWs), that combines radial with angular acceleration was introduced [1,2]. Like a tornado, ToWs intensity maxima outline a spiral of decreasing radius and pitch as they propagate. The combination of angular acceleration with intense abrupt autofocusing, and the ability to tailor the confined focal volume makes these novel waves ideal for applications. On the other hand, propagation of optical waves in turbulent media is affected by mainly by turbulence, but also scattering and absorption. In this thesis we theoretically study, using numerical simulations the effect of turbulence on the propagation of ToWs. Our study focuses on schemes that refer to optical telecommunication links and the use realistic atmosphere models as a reference medium. The link quality as well as the effectiveness of each model, is characterized by estimating the scintillation index, the intensity-weighted average as well as other statistical properties of the beam that reaches the receiver.
