Abstract Introduction: Blood donation is one of the most basic principles of volunteering and is considered an altruistic act that gives life. Blood donation is a vital act in the health care system and blood donors are an important pillar of contribution to it. In the last decade, the demand for blood has been increasing, both in Greece and internationally, due to sophisticated surgical procedures and the increase in life expectancy. However, there is a great shortage of regular blood donors who donate blood without need from their wider environment. Medical students are a potential tank of new regular blood donors. Purpose: The present study investigated the attitude and beliefs of undergraduate students who studying from the first to the sixth year of the Medicine School of the University of Crete, regarding blood donation. Methodology: The research was carried out on undergraduate students (182 women, 138 men) of the School of Medicine at the University of Crete, during the current academic year (May 2023). It was a cross-sectional observational study and data collection was done by filling in an anonymous special weighted questionnaire that included the Blood Donation Attitudes & Knowledge Scale. It consists of 11 questions that respectively investigate knowledge and attitudes about blood donation with an assessment of their score (score 0-100) where a higher score indicates a high degree of knowledge, attitudes & concern about blood donation. By means of analysis of covariance (ancova) the trend of the score was checked along the years of study using age and body mass index as covariates. Results: 320 undergraduate students at the Medicine School of the University of Crete participated in the research, 138 men and 182 women. Participating undergraduates ranged in age from 19-43 and were enrolled in their first through sixth year. Sophomores accounted for the majority of the survey at 20.3% (n=65). The results showed that the majority of students did not face any health issues Nevertheless, 47.5% (n=152) of the participants had donated blood at least once in their life and of these only 25.9% (n=83) have repeated the procedure. On the contrary, the majority of students believe that donating blood is a good act, with the percentage reaching 99.4% (n=318) and also 87.5% (n=280) of students believe that religious beliefs should not influence blood donation. Furthermore, it appears from the results that 94.7% (n=303) of the participants would donate blood if a family member needed it. A large part of the medical students has knowledge about rare blood groups and their importance as well as about the legislative framework regarding the donation of organs, tissues and bone marrow. Moderate levels of Attitudes and Knowledge about Blood Donation were found (mean score 56.4 in a range of 0-100), while a small percentage of students (16.3%) have a high level of Attitudes and Knowledge about blood donation. A higher score appeared to be significantly associated with increased age or year of study and increased body mass index (p<0.05). More than twice the percentage of students in the 4th-6th year has a high degree of Attitudes and Knowledge compared to the 1st-3rd (23.6% vs. 10.6%, p=0.002). More generally, along the years of study (from the 1st to the 6th) the mean score of Attitudes and Knowledge about Blood Donation of the students seems to increase significantly (p=0.003 or p-trend=0.034). Conclusion: Moderate levels of Attitudes and Knowledge about Blood Donation were estimated among the students of the School of Medicine with a significant tendency to increase along the years of study. Therefore, despite the moderate levels of Attitudes and Knowledge resulting from the present research, medical students continue to be a source of new blood donors who develop through their studies in Medicine.
