Abstract The object of this study is the professional identities of theater directors. Its main purpose is to identify the factors that participate in the construction of professional identities, emphasizing the perspective of the participants through the investigation of their perceptions of the subject and the process of this identification of them as theater directors. The process is examined within its social and political context, leading to the analysis of the artistic work and the study to the theater as a workplace, which is the natural environment for the formation of the theater director's identity. The research consists of three parts. Part I is our theoretical approach, examining thematic units and keywords that analyze and delimit our topic. These led us to the formation of both, the criteria and the thematic categories, we utilized them for the planning and implementation of the field research, in Part B. In Part 3, the data collected in the field are analyzed, according to the directions formed by the theoretical approach of Part 1. To conduct a qualitative in-depth research, 6 interviews were conducted, with the application of a semi-structured interview guide, specially designed for this study. The primary data collected were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The conclusions highlight the dialectic between the individual and the collective level in the personal perceptions and self-definition of the directors of the sample, as an important factor that dominates their answers. The personal history, expectations and choices of the participants formed a personalized framework for each of them, which affects the way in which both their perceptions and their self-definition are formed at an individual level. However, although individual-level factors are important, they are not immutable. They are influenced to a great extent, often to a decisive extent, by the characteristics of the social and especially the cultural environment, which give a dynamic to the subject's personal perceptions and self-determination. These characteristics of the framework refer to the particularities of the artistic work and the conditions prevailing in the theatrical work environment, its flexible forms being more representative. The study highlights, essentially, the various aspects of this dynamic process which, thanks to the dialectic of the individual and the collective level, forms the professional identity of the theater directors, who make up our sample
