Abstract endometrial cells, L-carnitine increased the number of T-lymphocytes and macrophages, as well as the levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6, GM-CSF and VEGF, a phenomenon that lasted more than 60 days after Ishikawa cell administration, indicating thus a chronic inflammatory situation. The elevated levels of L-carnitine in the peritoneal fluid and not in the serum showed that L-carnitine is probably used by peritoneal cells. These results extended our previous findings indicating that L-carnitine can not only lead to endometriosis establishment but can also aggravate an already established endometriotic state to the female organism. To conclude, the findings analyzed above are relevant to human endometriosis and indicate that exogenous L-carnitine may play a role in the pathophysiology of endometriosis.
