Abstract This MSc dissertation investigates the photocatalytic degradation of three pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, diclofenac and carbamazepine), using as semiconducting photocatalytic materials ZnO and TiO2 P25. Evaluation of the photocatalytic activity of these materials took place under UV irradiation at 238/240-577/599 nm, with maximum wavelength at 366 nm. The reduction of the initial concentration of each drug was quantified via liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, important parameters that affect the process were examined, such as initial concentration of the catalyst, initial concentration of the pharmaceutical pollutant, wavelength of the radiation and contribution of hydroxyl radicals in the total degradation of the studied pollutants. It was observed that complete removal of 10 ppm of each drug was achieved after 15 to 30 minutes of exposure of the aqueous suspensions to light irradiation, and an increase of the initial concentration of the pollutant increased the time required for complete degradation. ZnO showed better performance for diclofenac and TiO2 P25 for carbamazepine and ibuprofen. Photolysis turned out to be an effective removal method, while irradiation of the pharmaceutical suspensions or solutions with radiation at wavelengths over 390 nm reduced or zeroed the efficiency of the process. Finally, the contribution of free hydroxyl radicals in the overall removal of the pollutant was considered important for carbamazepine, while in the case of diclofenac and ibuprofen was evaluated as null and limited respectively.
