Abstract

In Greece, like in most countries, a growth in the number of elderly is noted. Supported by the State and the local Public Administration, elderly, try to succeed in staying in their natural family environment by participating in the “Homecare” programs. The aim of the present study is the investigation of the satisfaction of the elderly regarding the offered services of the “Homecare” program in the municipality of Heraklion and the expression of suggestions and strategies for the reinforcement of the existing strategies, structures, so that possibilities of improvement of the living conditions, health and quality of the elderly’ s life will be created. The sample of the study is made up with 84 elderly that are served by the “Homecare” program of the municipality of Heraklion. The questionnaire, “Home Care Satisfaction Measure” (HCSM) was used for investigating the satisfaction of the elderly. According to the results of our study, it is concluded that the majority of the elderly (90%) appear to be satisfied from both the services of the “Homecare” programs and their carers. It can also be concluded that the health and social services are offered in the majority of the sample (80%). Yet their wish for the offer of more services appears to be rather interesting, something that makes the need for improvement of the program’ s function clear. For the offer of the best quality services, it seems necessary, the list of needs of the elderly and the assessment research of the progress so far, of the institution of the “Homecare” programs in the municipality of Heraklion, to be carried out, as well as to the whole Greece, having as goal the improvement of the offered services.
