Abstract Introduction: ICUs, treatment focuses on preserving patients 'lives by overcoming other patients' needs such as pain and dignity. To make this happen, advanced technology is widely used to delay the death process. This process strains the doctors and nurses of the ICU as it is a psychologically damaging process both in terms of emotional state and in terms of physical deterioration. It is also known that in the ICUs of Greece the staff is not sufficient in proportion to the patients. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the views of the medical staff of the ICU of the University Hospital of Heraklion regarding the views on the End of Life in the units and the gradual reduction of the treatment they receive. Another part that will be examined is the emotional strain that the staff undergoes in order to cope with the demanding environment in which they work but also with the critical condition of the patients. Methods: To achieve this, a cross sectional observational study was performed. The research will take place at the University General Hospital of Heraklion, in 3 units: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Two questionnaires were used for data collection. The first questionnaire of the views of doctors and nurses on the issues related to the decisions to limit treatment consists of 103 questions for doctors and 95 for nurses and the issues it investigates are the decision-making process of de-escalation or withdrawal of treatments, the satisfaction of professionals the commitment of ICUs to high Ethical Standards, communication with the patient's family or relatives, the criteria used to discontinue treatment, legal responsibility and fear of legal consequences, the information provided by family doctors and / or nursing staff. The second Occupational Exhaustion Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most widely used to assess occupational burnout. It includes 22 questions related to the 3 dimensions of burnout, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal fulfillment - personal achievement. Results: In the study most of the participants were nurses with a mean age of 30-40 years and at least 1 child. According to the study, the majority of the sample states that a process of limiting treatment is necessary and beneficial. The responders also pointed out that 47.1%, a percentage corresponding to the doctors who participated, believe that there is no complete information of the family. The largest percentage considers that the most appropriate term is "Refusal of vain care". It also showed that with a small difference, most doctors state that they are not afraid of legal consequences (45.8%), compared to the percentage of those who are afraid (41.1%). Job burnout is 26.25% of the total while emotional fatigue is greater for nurses. Finally, burnout is high for both doctors and nurses. Conclusions: According to the results, there is a lack of unanimity due to the lack of information for nurses. Job satisfaction, but also burnout, is high. It is necessary to create a legal framework as there is a fear of legal consequences.
